Juan

We can find a solution, not just by force of arms.

Juan like many in Lagartillo is a survivor of the contra attack in 1984 and afterwards.

What is the most important thing in your life and why?
The most important thing, and I have always said that, is to learn a trade. And I have a job… no clue for how many years now…Every day I learn more about this small employment. I work in this small library. Here we offer many possibilities to our friends from abroad who visit us in our small community. I think that this is a big help. I always wanted to work and here I always have had many possibilities to do so. When the first meeting for the foundation of the association hijos del maíz  took place… well, I wasn´t invited but I always was in contact with them before working with them. And about 3 years after the foundation they asked me if I wanted to take part and work in this small library. They told me:“You are going to do a good job in the library, I know that you will be a great help to the people of the communities who always come here for photocopies as well as to the primary school teacher and the students.“ I am a big help to the students and the teachers.

You work in a library, so I guess you enjoy reading a lot. Which books have had the biggest influence on you?
Well, the most important book, the one that I always enjoyed reading, is a history book. And books about economy. Here in the community there are not many bookshops, but at least in Estelí there is one. And every time I go to a meeting in Estelí I spend one hour in the library.

And apart from books – what makes you happy?
I feel good here, I am healthy, and this is the most important thing. Also all the conversations, it´s a big help to our friends from abroad and for me this small exchange is great, too.

What was the best moment/day in your life so far?
Well, I guess that maybe I still lack this day, I still lack this day to give you an exact situation.

If you could ask for one wish – money doesn´t matter – what would it be?
If I really had the opportunity and as much money as you say the first thing I would like to do is to get to know another country where I have many friends. Where do you have many friends? In Cuba, England, France… If there was the opportunity… I know I don´t have the chance… but if I had it… I would like that very much. At least Italy, where I also have many friends…

What have you done that you’re most proud to have achieved?
The first thing that I am proud of this that I have the feeling that I am a big help to this association (Hijos del maíz) and that I am a member. I have the feeling that I cannot contribute enough, but yeah… every day a little bit, step by step… Also the work here in the community and in the library.

If you could send a message to the entire world, what would you say?
The only message that I would like to send to every country of the world is that we fight better (are more successful) if every country can do its own thing and we find solutions, starting with all those wars that are being fought right now in different countries. You have to deal with the issue of weapons. With the families of other countries and the family of the world itself. There are ways of working together in a different way, not waging war against other countries, not turning people into murderous Contras. We can find a solution, not just by force of arms.

In Kuba, in England, in Frankreich…

Was hast du getan worauf du besonders stolz bist?
