Ivonne

It is all about finding out why you are here.

I met Ivonne at the island Ometepe at the ecofinca/hostel El Zopilote. She is Freelancer, has been living in the jungle in Peru for the last 5 years and travels around the world.

Apart from earning money – for what do you get up in the morning?
To be happy, to develop myself and to do what I feel like doing. This is something you have to find out first of all. Oftentimes you just don´t now what you want to do. It is really difficult to find out what you really want to do, but to be able to do this first of all you need freedom. And in the first place it is all about finding out why you are here, well, the meaning of life. I am still looking for that one (laughs). But it is a path, it is a development. There is no certain most important thing but the searching itself and to be true to yourself. So when you realize that you don´t like a certain situation or you feel unhappy.. then to really have the guts to change the situation. This is the most important thing for me. To listen to yourself, to listen to you body, to realize what is good for yourself and then to just go for it.

What does a perfect day look like for you?
Probably to wake up somewhere really nice, well, within nature. For example at my farm which is really in the middle of the jungle. Maybe to be woken up by my dog (laughs). Or when I travel for example at a beach, you hear the waves, you hear the monkeys,… this is a already a perfect start. Then to eat something delicious, I like fresh fruits in the morning. Then maybe to do some yoga or to go surfing, just to get going. Nice talks with nice people, to exchange experiences, to learn something new.

Then I have to admit I really like to work about 2-3 hours. This is what I like best about my life, that I feel like working. I write blog posts for a company and I translate… and it is just this accomplishment to have finished something at the end of the day. I just don´t chill out like any other hippie who hang out all day long in their hammocks, but every day I have this small feeling of success. When the blog post gets published 2-3 weeks later and comments appear… this again is small meaning of life. I translate a lot of material for a consulting company that collects theories from all over the world about how you can lead companies and people in a better way, how to apply successful change management and finding innovation. This is very exciting for me because I left Germany for exactly that reason. I worked for a company that had very old structures where I could not develop myself. This is still important to me right now and I find it very interesting how fate made me find this company which is about to revolutionize management in Germany. It is also important to me that this is a part of my day. I learn something new for myself via working als well.

Then, after 2-3 hours of work, to go to the beach, a delicious lunch… fresh fish, fresh vegetables… and in the evening maybe a campfire, some people playing music… or pizza night in El Zopilote (where we are now) 😉 or at my place at the farm… you sit together cozily in the candlelight, tell each other stories…

Yes, that would be a great day: to learn something new, to eat healthy, to enjoy life… and all this without an Iphone, without a tv… just being together, with the people.

Who has inspired you in your life and why? A role model maybe?
Hm, I was never really the role model type, I don´t now why. What did change my life indeed was my first stay in the USA, I was there as an Au-Pair. There was also another German, a little older than me, she had already finished her training as a kindergarten teacher. I had just finished high-school. And she was kind of alternative, went to rainbow gatherings, enjoyed her life… and that was really inspiring for me. I was also alone for the first time, separated from Mommy, in the USA, far away… so I was open for new ideas. We did a lot together, and my wanderlust developed that way. In former times I was really shy and she has helped me to open up a bit and approach people. Yeah, actually she was indeed a kind of role model.

If you could talk to yourself as a 19-year old Au-Pair – what kind of advice would you give her?
Probably to really listen to your heart, to take your life into your own hands. Not to care so much about what other people think about you. They don´t think about you anyway, they are so busy with themselves. Then to really try to find out what you want in life because you just have this one life. Well, if you believe in Karma and reincarnation you have some more lives… but by all means you should make use of the one you have now. Even if that means telling your mom: „I now will go to Peru“ knowing that this is a bit difficult and then doing it anyway. Of course this is hard for a mother, but by now it is ok. Also because now and then I come back to Germany.

If you could ask for one wish, what would it be?
Hm, this is a good questions because it implies that I lack something at the moment. I would like to learn musical instruments, unfortunately I am not really talented. Well I have tried to learn to play the guitar and that did not sound very good… I am better now at drumming, it is also easier 🙂
Of course my life depends on what the state of Peru will decide concerning the visa, how that goes on. I wish that I could just keep on living peacefully on my farm in Peru, that people from allover the world come and participate and that everything keeps growing. It is just a place in the world where people can come and try out if this alternative lifestyle works for them. Because it does not work for everyone. In former times I oftentimes went camping and I always felt close to nature. I found the perfect life for myself. But I am not completely hippie, I could not just do handicrafts and jewelery or learn to juggle and play the guitar on the city square, sing and live on that… that would not be my thing. I am happy to have a „real“ job as a freelancer and that I can combine these 2 worlds and show to other people that: yes, you can combine the two. You don´t have to jump from one extreme to the other but it is possible to combine both of them.

But I also have to say that my life only works that way because there is this big difference. I earn German money and l live in a country where it is worth 4 times its amount. If this was not the case I of course would have to work for 8 hours. Sure, this is a privilege. We have a German passport, we can travel anywhere with that.

I would also like to learn more about natural healing, to intensify my yoga practice, to learn more about myself, maybe to be able to heal other people, that would be awesome as well. It is interesting that you don´t wish for anything that is immediate change but these things you name are rather goals. This is a big difference to many people I talked to before. Well,… what could be there with the snap of a finger? No idea. Sure, things like world peace… you could wish for that but if you face reality you know that this will never happen because there will always be forces working in the background because there is some profit to make, which again will start some conflicts.

Oft weiß man ja was man nicht machen will.

Tja was könnte vom Himmel fallen was man sofort hat, was könnte das sein? Keine Ahnung.
